CETA - EU-Canada Free Trade Agreement ratified by European Parliament

On 15 February 2017, the European Parliament voted in favor of CETA, the Comprehensive Economic&Trade Agreement with Canada by 408 votes in favor and 254 against.A second step achieved after the INTA Committee (the European Parliament International Trade commitee) recommendation adopted last 24th January to give consent to this agreement.

Further to the 5 years of negotiations and 2,5 years of legal scrubbing delayed by the “Walloon episode”, the CETA will finally enter provisionally into force from April 2017.

This means that the tariff dismantling will now be operational. For textile products, the customs duties will be removed from the 1st day of application. EU exports will benefit 0 duties provided that goods comply with the double transformation rules of origin and that economic operators are registered as “approved exporters”.

What is the next step? The agreement is then due to be voted by all national Parliaments of the 28 member States in order to be entirely applicable (including the Investment Court System).
